Ballina Town Council will be putting new draft signage bye-laws out to public consultation in the next few weeks. Ballina councillors keep commercial rates the same

Following their second public meeting and after a number of behind closed doors sessions the elected members of Ballina Town Council finalised their budget for 2013 on Wednesday evening. Following the protracted discussions, the members agreed to keep the commercial rate the same in the town as the previous year at a figure of €64.52 in the euro, but made a number of changes to the spending priorities in the budget.

In what could possibly be their final budget the members of Castlebar Town Council voted to reduce the commercial rate by one per cent for the coming year. The members held their annual budget meeting on Tuesday afternoon and following a two hour debate they were able to agree the budget for 2013. The commercial new rate for the town will now be 70.23 in the euro, down from 70.94 last year.

A delegation from Westport recently travelled to the smarter travel town of Freiburg, which is located in south west Germany near the Black Forest, for a smarter travel study tour. The university city is know for its advanced environmentally friendly practices and therefore the tour from Westport explored the area over two days in order see how Westport can approach the development of such sustainable mobility as Freiburg.

Westport is co-ordinating a number of ideas in preparation of The Gathering 2013—a year long celebration, which will encourage as many of the Diaspora as possible to return to the country, According to festival co-ordinator Dermot Langan, October 31 is the deadline for all ideas so that a calendar of events can then be prepared for the Westport area. Mr Langan said: “as Westport is the best place to live it is also the best place to gather.”

Fury that machinery used at Rockies led to bones being unearthed

Works being carried out at the historic Rockies site in Westport has caused outrage among concerned locals, who in a letter distributed to local representatives, outlined that they were “disturbed by the lack of respect shown to an ancestral resting place” as “human remains have been exposed and scattered about the site.”
